The Historic Town of Sedan:

Sedan was originally a medieval town dominated by the impressive Chateau Fort.

Sedan is situated on the river Meuse, nestling in a valley on the edge of the Ardennes forest. Sedan had an important tapestry and carpet industry on which the wealth of the town was based, along with being on one of the few important routes south through the Ardennes.

Sedan, along with outlying villages, was partially destroyed in the 1870 Franco-Prussian war. (A fate repeated in WWI and WWII). In spite of this, there are still a wealth of fine buildings worth viewing. Many residences were built after the partial dismantling of the town’s defences following the 1870 conflict - adding to the richness of the architecture.

Sedan has an on-going policy of restoring its architectural heritage.

Turenne -

The French general ‘Turrenne’ was born in Sedan in 1611. He became the Marechal de France and is reputed to have never lost a battle.

Sedan Chateau Fort -

Considered by the Ardennais to be the largest Chateau Fort in Europe.

There is an excellent castle tour with an impressive museum, mainly dedicated to the 1870 battle of the Franco-Prussian war.
