Maginot Line Tour Details : (Itinery)
At each location a full description of the French defensive position is given - An explanation of the types of Blockhouse and their effectiveness, also the nature of the combat and how it unfolded, together with an explanation of the significance of the local combat - in terms of the campaign as a whole.
Sedan Maginot Tours:
A visit to a selection of the Blockhouses in the Sedan region. These range from small concrete machine gun of observation casemates, up to impressive Artillery Blockhouses. Also to be seen are a selection of trench systems which are still visible to this day.
Selection of Maison Fortes:
These are Blockhouses with a first floor and roof, disguised to look like ordinary houses - 22 were built in front of the main Maginot position. There are also several viewing points around Sedan from which the German attack can be explained in detail.
Visit to Gros Ouvrage Le Chenios: (not accessible underground)
This is the Ouvrage which gave covering artillery fire to La Ferte - the Petit Ouvrage captured by the Germans in combat in the campaign. (La Ferte is open to the public for underground tours).
Stonne:
The village of Stonne and the surrounding area was the site of some of the most intensive combat of 1940. Approximately one third of all German casualties in the campaign were from the combat around Stonne. At Stonne you can see a Char B1 bis tank and 47mm anti-tank gun. Also to be seen is a 75mm artillery piece in the village of Sy.
Blockhouse 42
A North facing Artillery Blockhouse at Flize, covering the river Meuse and approach to Charleville-Meziers.
The main armament was a 75mm artillery piece.
Blockhouse 32
A North facing Artillery Blockhouse towards Montherme, covering the river Meuse and situated north of Charleville-Meziers.
The main armament was a 75mm artillery piece.
